Personal Project; Decay - Inspired by Valerie Hegarty / Wire Frames

The work of Valerie Hegarty who uses various medias and creates paintings that make full use of their canvas appealed to me as the pieces of work showed several different happenings all at the same time, which I thought would be an interesting concept to use as I personally found that by creating a piece which embraced more of a three dimensional quality would create an attention-grabbing result on the viewer. The way in which this artist created large scale pieces which were burnt and twisted made the concept of decay remarkable and enthralling, with twisted frames holding an image that was almost completely destroyed. I found the messy but structured quality of the work interesting and full of life, even though these pieces are based on matter decaying.

Above is the piece that I did, which is inspired by Valerie Hegarty's. Here's a quick explanation of what I did:

1.) I took some twisty tie that I bought from a local hardware store and made it into a small rectangle

2.) I then took a finer wire and twisted it around the rectangular frame randomly, so that the wire went from one side of the frame to the other

3.) I then sewed a piece of white cotton fabric around the frame, so that the entire frame was covered and then I began to paint  from a picture I had taken in the boiler room

I made a simple sketch book explaining the wire frames I had made in detail

Close ups of the piece are shown above. After taking these pictures I then went on and coated the piece in PVA glue to give it a shinier effect similar to that of the artist I set out to emulate.

Project Based on the Seaside - Work in the Style of Silvia Palissero

Pieces by SIlvia Palissero inspired me to paint pictures of people by the sea with their hair painted in this style. The inky tones within the face and the paint dripping down gave a delicate eeriness to the work. I wanted to show people as beautiful creatures by the sea, looking hauntingly fascinating. The beach covered with litter caused by the consumers contrasted with the innocent looking state people.

Facial Expressions Project - Observations

The small pieces displayed far apart on a blank canvas showed the images of crazy faces almost looking as if they are escaping from the black frame which surrounds them. With different medias used show within each it gives a thought provoking interest to the viewer.

Personal Project; Decay - Decay within Buildings

I decided to embroider images within the architecture of the Morecambe Winter Gardens. By embroidering these images in a messy way I thought it could help show the disintegration of the old, run down theatre, as well as using old, burnt fabric to show my observations.

Facial Expressions Project - Final Piece

Creating a final piece inspired by the work of Katheryn Elyse made an interesting illustrated piece of work. With the bright colours, tones on the faces, and the different thicknesses of lines all incorporated to show the ever changing emotions of a human.

Personal Project; Decay - Inspired by Rosamond Purcell

I was inspired by the work of Rosamond Purcell who finds and creates decayed objects. When I first looked at her pieces of artwork I found them captivatingly interesting, with dishevelled paper torn, with various items inserted within. However, when I looked at what was within her artwork I saw fish bones, old items, woven into old, burnt books, creating pieces that were really quite remarkable. This appealed to me as the book could be metaphorically telling a story of something which evidently also decays. I also loved the idea of using bits of text within art and thought this could be incorporated within my own pieces. I wanted to use The Winter Gardens as a setting for work inspired by Rosamond Purcell’s in order to create something that would make people think about the work and the themes associated with it such as the concept of time. I did this by showing the decay of The Morecambe Winter Gardens through embroidery, torn pictures and pieces of fabric - symbolising performers costumes.

Personal Project; Decay - Performers

Ashley James Bunn’s artwork appealed to me inherently as I found his pieces to be hauntingly eye-catching. I liked the used dark colours were used within his work and how the image itself almost looked to be fading away and decaying. I thought that this concept would work well within my own work, with perhaps past events that happened in The Winter Gardens – such as actors, and most recently dancers and musicians who have performed to raise money to reconstruct and redecorate the decaying building. I thought that by creating images of performers and causing these to fade and drip would show how the theatre was once active and enthralling with performances.

I explored decay within nature, and found that looking at flowers and plants which were dying in winter gave a hauntingly beautiful effect. I was inspired by how, at a glance these decaying flowers and plants could be perceived as unappealing, however after looking at these more closely I found it interesting and fascinating how these things were dying but still had an eerie and captivating appeal to them.
